Questions about our grocery department? Contact the Grocery Gurus Spike & Joe. One of the things that makes Newport Ave. Market so exceptional is our unsurpassed selection of imported and specialty foods and hard to find items. We try hard to be the source for gourmet cooks and foodies looking for the latest ingredients. We shop the world to bring you things you won’t find anywhere else in town. Explore the oils. We don’t stop at corn and olive. We specialize in nut oils, infused oils, Italian oils, Spanish oils, finishing oils, and dipping oils. For an extra special collection of good eatin’ treats, check out our “Rude Rudy” personal label items. They’re made special for us and just too yummy to pass up! Try Rude Rudy’s Bleu Cheese Pecan Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing on your next salad or Rude Rudy’s Tomato Pinenut Parmesan Pasta Sauce on your next plate of pasta. Into antipasto? Try Rude Rudy’s Marinated Mushrooms or Dilled Green Beans and if you’ve never tried a caramel noogie you don’t know what you’re missing. Pasta, rice, and beans? We carry a bellisimo selection of imported Italian pasta, as well as whole wheat pasta, brown rice pasta, corn pasta and spelt, tomato, spinach, and squid ink pastas. And you can find orzo, arborio, carnaroli, quinoa, jasmine rice, bamboo rice, and Himalayan red rice; then there are beans, too. Cranberry beans, black beans, favas, cannellini, and Turkish lentils just to get you started. Got coffee? If you’re not hooked on a favorite already, try something locally roasted from Di Lusso or Strictly Organic; or try Peet’s Coffee from Berkeley, California, or something imported from Italy like Illy Espresso Coffee or Torrefazione.
Totally into tea? We have an extensive selection to brew. Go beyond Lipton to Republic of Tea, PG Tips from England, or Numi Organic flowering teas. Outdoor barbequing isn’t just for summer anymore and we’ve got an unusually great collection of cedar and alder planks, marinades and rubs, grilling wood, and a line of wood chips made from wild apple, black cherry, mesquite, and golden birch. We’ve even got old wine barrel staves for smoking to inspire any barbeque chef. Welcome to baking paradise. Specialty flours, imported spices, perforated French bread pans and paper molds, gel food colorings, and some of the premium baking chocolates from around the world including: Valrhona, Callebaut, and Scharffen Berger. Keep it clean… choose from an enticing selection of household cleaners like Mrs. Meyers Lemon Verbena Counter Top Spray or Caldrea Lavender Pine Dish Soap. Cleaning has never smelled so good. We’ve also got body and bath options from earth friendly Burt’s Bees products to the popular, locally owned and produced Dani Bath line of natural products for bath, body, and home.
Grocery Gurus, Spike and Joe
Spike Bement, Store Manager Joe Anzaldo, Assistant Store Manager and Grocery Department Manager
Spike – I’ve been in the grocery business for more than 30 years, here at Newport Ave. Market since 1991. I used to be an old typical “cornflake jockey,” as we call them. I’ve worked at just about every job there is in a grocery store.
Joe – Like Spike, I’ve worked in this industry for a long time, more than 18 years, and mostly with a large chain. I’ve been with Newport Market since about the beginning of 2005, so while Spike’s got a few years on me here at the store, I’m catching up quick on what makes this store out of the ordinary.
